Maternity Clothes? Don’t Waste Your Money!

And What’s a Better Use of Your Money

The first few months of your pregnancy, you can usually still wear your regular clothes, but at some point, your pants will start feeling a bit tighter and less comfortable. By now, you’re probably also being flooded with ads, well-meaning advice, and a long list of so-called must-haves. Maternity clothes are definitely on that list. But how necessary is a completely new wardrobe, really?

The Marketing Machine Behind Maternity Wear

The maternity fashion industry knows exactly how to lure you in — from glossy ads to influencers who overhaul their entire wardrobes the moment they hold a positive test. It can almost feel like you’re missing out if you don’t join in. Yet most women only wear maternity clothes for a few months. After that, they end up in the attic or in a box for “maybe someday.”

Rihanna: The Gamechanger

A striking example of how it can be done differently is Rihanna. She refused to wear maternity clothes because she wanted to celebrate her pregnancy and embrace her changing body instead of hiding it. She chooses stylish, often bold outfits that show off her (bare) belly and aims to make a statement against the traditional expectations of maternity fashion.

During her pregnancies, she broke all the style rules: no oversized sweaters to hide everything, but crop tops, sheer dresses, and outfits that put her bump in the spotlight. She showed that you don’t need special maternity clothes to look amazing, you can simply stay true to your own style. Rihanna inspired women worldwide to celebrate their pregnancies with their existing wardrobes, cleverly combined and worn with confidence.

Your Own Closet Is Your Best Friend

Take a good look at what you already have. Oversized shirts, leggings, maxi dresses, loose cardigans: often, these can get you through much of your pregnancy. A simple hair tie can extend the button on your jeans, and a belly band can suddenly make regular jeans pregnancy-proof.

Smart Borrowing or Swapping

Many women have a pile of maternity clothes they only wore for a few months. Ask around and often you can borrow clothes for free or for a small price. Organize a swap afternoon with friends who are or have been pregnant. This saves you money and closet space.

Secondhand Always Scores

Shopping secondhand is sustainable and budget-friendly. Platforms like Vinted, Marktplaats, or local giveaway groups are full of good-quality maternity clothes. Local thrift stores, especially in areas with many young mothers, can also have good options. Often, these pieces are still in excellent condition.

What Might Be Worth Buying New?

There are a few basics that really make life easier:

  • A good nursing bra: comfortable, supportive, and useful after birth. Nowadays, there are also adjustable ones that you can use during pregnancy too.

  • 1 or 2 leggings with a belly band: ideal when your regular pants really don’t fit anymore.

  • A comfortable nightdress: handy for postpartum recovery and breastfeeding.

What’s a Better Way to Spend Your Money?

Instead of piles of maternity clothes, it’s wiser to invest in things that actually make your pregnancy and postpartum period more comfortable. Remember: a mom who’s doing well can take better care of her baby. Something about putting on your own oxygen mask first…

  • Good nutrition: nutrition is the foundation for your energy and your baby’s growth. More and more companies now offer healthy meal delivery for the postpartum weeks.

  • Supplements: there are more and more brands selling pregnancy supplements. Always consult your healthcare provider about what’s recommended for you.

  • A pregnancy course: good preparation can positively impact your birth experience and recovery.

  • Help at home: give yourself rest by hiring a cleaner or a postpartum doula, for example. Also, keep in mind that maternity care services may not always be able to cover the full period due to staff shortages.

  • A baby wrap or ergonomic carrier: keeps you mobile and lets you cuddle your baby comfortably.

  • Comfort for your body: think of a pregnancy pillow to help you sleep better, or a postnatal massage to support your recovery.

  • Postpartum products: there are many products on the market that can help you recover after birth. They can reduce pain and sometimes help prevent infections. For example: peri bottles, warm and cold breast compresses and maternity pads, and nursing nightgowns. At Essentuary, you can find all these products in a postpartum box — so you’re ready for recovery in one go.
